Invictus by William Earnest Henley

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.
In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.
Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds and shall find me unafraid.
It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.

The day the child realizes that all adults are imperfect, he becomes an adolescent; the day he forgives them, he becomes an adult...Alden Nolan

Warren Pryor

When every pencil meant a sacrifice
his parents boarded him in town
slaving to free him from the stony fields
the meager acreage that bore them down.

The blushed with pride when, at his graduation,
they watched him picking up the slender scroll,
his passport from the years of brutal toil
and lonely patience in a barren hole.

When he went in the Bank their cups run over.
They marvelled how me wore a milk-white shirt
workdays and jeans on Saturdays.  He was saved
from their thistle-strewn farm and its red dirt.

And he said nothing.  Hard and serious
like a young bear inside his teller's cage,
his axe strewn hands upon the paper bills
aching with empty strength and throttled rage.

Feb. 23, 2011, ST. PETERSBURG (CBS4) – St. Petersburg Police have arrested a 16 year-old boy in the shooting death of an officer late Monday night.
The teen, who has not been identified because of his age, has been arrested on a juvenile charge of first degree murder. It will be up to prosecutors whether to charge the teen as an adult.
“When he did make the admission on tape for us at the end of the day, it was quite apparent that he was remorseful in his actions,” Harmon said during a late night news conference. “He cried.”
According to the department, around 10:30 p.m. Officer David Crawford, 46, was instructed to check out a suspicious person near Tropicana Field, home of the Tampa Bay Rays. Crawford spotted the guy but when he got out his patrol car and went to approach him, things went horribly wrong. Officer Donald Ziglar said he heard an exchange of gunfire and found Crawford on the ground by his cruiser, he had been shot multiple times. Crawford was rushed to Bayfront Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
